Making new friends and adjusting
to a new school can be disconcerting enough, but when your neighbor and
classmate is a megalomaniac, it can be downright demoralizing. Scooter,
never one to suffer from low self-esteem, welcomes Hiro, a 5th grade Japanese
boy, with the warmth and sensitivity of a frozen dinner. Scooter's tendency
to polarize people, leaves Hiro distraught with the love/hate relationship,
which develops between them. While Scooter's obliviousness infuriates,
Hiro is inexplicably drawn to his brazenness and the sheer spectacle that
is Scooter's life. Come along as cultures clash and Hiro becomes inevitably
enmeshed in Scooter's world.
 |
SCOOTER- If there is
any certainty in this world, the greatness that will be thrust upon
Scooter, must surely be one. His wealth and fame assured as a rock
star, he is truly a legend in his own mind. |
 |
HIRO- 11 year old Japanese
latchkey boy, who struggles with his cultural identity, while trying
to fit in with his new classmates. While his friendship with Scooter
grows, so too does his influence. |
 |
PAGE- Scooter's precocious
older sister, who is at constant odds with him. They both torment
each other as only as siblings can. |
 |
BRENDA- Mother of Scooter
and Page, who has penchant for dating younger men. |
 |
KIYOKO- Hiro's overworked
mother, with little time for family. Set in her traditional ways,
she struggles with Hiro's americanization. |
 |
MOJO- Hiro's pet snake(hognose),
who allows him to vent and gives him perspective by offering sage
advice. |
